“Allow yourself to see what you don’t allow yourself to see.”
–Milton H. Erickson
Hypnotherapy has now been scientifically proven to be 93% successful with a course of six treatments. Compare this to traditional therapy which has a 38% success rate with 10 years of weekly sessions. No wonder hypnotherapy is seeing a surge in its popularity. Study
More and more people are turning to hypnotherapy. This is because it gets results rapidly. These results often last a lifetime, such as with hypnotherapy to stop-smoking, hypnosis to lose weight or hypnotherapy for anxiety removal.
Understanding Hypnosis
In general hypnotherapy is very misunderstood. Clients normally have no real idea how it works or what exactly happens during a session. Therefore, it is vitally important that each person who comes for hypnotherapy, is given a good understanding of proceedings. This takes the fear out of hypnosis and allows the person to fully relax. Everyone can go into hypnosis; you went into hypnosis last night just before you fell asleep. The only thing that will prevent you going into hypnosis, is yourself. You can’t be made to do anything you don’t morally agree with. Therefore, the pre-talk is vital. The hypnotherapist needs to know exactly what you do want and don’t want in your unconscious mind.
“The unconcsious mind records all 1001 little details the conscious mind neglects.”
–John Grinder, co-creator of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Parts Therapy
There are many different hypnotherapy techniques that can used in a session. These should be selected based on what will work best for the client. However, many hypnotherapists tend to stick to just a few that they know. Worse still, some will simply read a generic script to you. Now this can get some decent results, but unlikely to resolve serious trauma.
One of the more effective hypnotherapy techniques is known as Parts Therapy, or Parts Negotiation, or even Resource Therapy. Roy Hunter, Robert Dilts and Gordon Emmerson, respectively, designed these part therapy techniques. parts
The basic premise for parts therapy is that the unconscious mind is made up of many different parts. We have a part that drives the car, a part that dresses us, a part that chooses what to eat, a part that likes to socialize, a part that gets angry, a part that judges, a part that likes to be silly, etc. Gordon Emmerson estimates maybe 100 different parts.
A Great Analogy
A great analogy is that of our parts all living in a house. Maybe ten or so are sitting in the lounge with one part ‘executive’ at the front door. Executive means ‘executive function’, i.e.; the conscious part. The part that is reading this is your current ‘executive’ part. The other ten parts in the lounge are normally listening and able to advise the ‘conscious’ what it should do.
Imagine driving home late after work. You notice an inner voice suggesting you should eat now and stop at the fast-food place. Then another internal voice reminds you you are eating healthy this week. This is two parts making suggestions from the lounge to the ‘executive’ at the front door.
Aswell as 5-15 parts in the lounge there is also a basement. In here there is up to 100 parts. Many of these parts you will be completely unaware of. Some will be positive, some negative. Lurking in here may be the part of you that could be a Hollywood actor, or maybe a crime detective novelist. Also, this may be where many damaged and fearful parts live. Next to the basement is the last room, not everyone has this room. The bomb-shelter. In here are a few traumatized and phobic parts. Book a session
“Since most problems are created by our imagination and are thus imaginary, all we need are imaginary solutions.”
–Richard Bandler, co-creator of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Parts Negotiation
Gordon Emmerson refers to the parts in the lounge as ‘surface states’ and the parts in the basement as ‘underlying states’. When these underlying states take the consciousness (executive), there is often memory loss. This is because of a poor neural connection between surface states and underlying states.
These Parts are often formed in childhood. If a child is ‘told off and made to go to bed early, a coping strategy for this negative emotion, may be to bite their fingernails. This will produce a neural pathway in the brain. When ‘A’ happens (told off), do ‘B’ (bite nails) to reduce emotion. Once this behavior pattern has happened a few times, the neural programme is established. Now, a part is born to manage this nail-biting behavior, whenever feel negative emotion.
Resource Therapy
How exactly does a parts therapy session look. Let’s take for an example alcohol addiction. The first thing we need to do is diagnose the presenting issue. Many hypnotherapists will talk to the part that runs the alcohol behaviour. This is normally not very effective. Reason being is that the ‘alcohol behaviour’ part (retro part) is normally only doing this job, to block a negative emotion…the ‘vaded part’. We need to discover the negative emotion, just before the errant behaviour occurs. It is vital we are talking, doing therapy with the correct part.
Thank the retro part (it likes this as not liked by other parts) for protecting the ‘vaded part. Once we resolve the negative emotion the vaded part is experiencing, the alcohol addiction will resolve. Next step is for vaded part to revivify the specific time they felt this pain. Notice client experiencing this in their facial expression, posture, tone and breath rate. Now ask ‘what can I call you right now?’. It is very powerful to ascertain parts name, especially from the part itself.
Hypnosis Bridge (regression)
Next is the bridge (regression) to the initial sensitizing event (ISE). This can be done by asking where feel emotion? Go into emotion, colour, shape, location…now imagine sitting on the edge of this emotion and dangling your feet over the edge. What do your feet feel like as you swing them back and forth? About what age are your feet? Home
Once you have the correct part back at the ISE, the work really begins. Next step is expression. The part has been frozen in time, believing the horrible emotional event is still taking place. This is the place to inform the part this event/memory is over. That this is just an illusion and is in the past. They are safe with no need to be fearful. The part can now fully express how they feel, safely and lovingly. To whoever is in the memory. The hypnotherapist can suggest that they can shrink there attacker/abuser down in size to thumb size. The part has complete control here now. In fact, please don’t step on your attacker!
“People don’t come to therapy to change their past, but their future.”
–Milton H. Erickson
Resolving Trauma
Next the introject, or attacker can then be heard. This can help the part/client gain some perspective on the situation. Gain a deeper understanding and often a cathartic shift. Next is the removal. The part can decide id they still want this introject in their inner space. Understanding it’s their choice leads to empowerment.
Next stage is relief. Here a nurturing part is summoned to protect and heal the vaded part. Once this takes place a transformation is taking place. The hypnotherapist then skilfully notes that the wounded part is no longer wounded. And asks for a new name, a better fitting name? Next another part is called for. This part will behave how the client wishes when the next situation happens that would have triggered the alcoholic behaviour. The next part is to future pace. Check this new part will behave accordingly in future scenarios. Last of all, now the negative emotion has been resolved, the part running the addictive part needs a new job. Find a suitable job for this particularly strong part. gordon emmerson
